Act I, Scene Six

Amparo helps Dolores fix a wall at Dolores’ house. As Dolores complains the house is falling apart, she says “God help us,” to which Amparo responds that work, not prayer, is what changes things. Dolores responds by saying she won’t be attending Amparo’s protest. Amparo believes that their houses are sinking because they were built on top of a landfill. She says the government owes them money because they were lied to. All around them, people are leaving the neighborhood.
