Aidan’s old look
Clare and Aidan are used to driving in his dusty Volvo daily, but the last day Aidan looks restless, and his hands are hovering around the steering wheel. Clare looks at him, but she does not know what he is thinking. However, she notices that he looks older than in previous days because of his new hairstyle. The author writes, "She reaches over, resting a hand on the back of his neck, where his reddish hair is newly trimmed, and cut close in a way that makes him look older somehow." All this time, Aidan is thinking of telling Clare they elope instead of going to further their studies in different universities. He cannot imagine they will go different ways.
The last date
The author uses sight imagery to describe Clare and Aidan's last date. Since Aidan knows this might be the last time he sees his love, he has organized a special date with Clare. He has put on a special tuxedo to show Clare how serious he is with this relationship. Aidan wants to convince Clare they should run away together to a different country to nourish their love. The date is spoilt by the abrupt arrival of Scotty and Stella in the restaurant. Aidan did not know that Stella and Scotty were employees in the restaurant. The date meant to be special turned out to be a friendly dinner.
The image of perfection
Aidan always tried to hide so many things from Clare. Aidan painted a perfect image in front of Clare, and he assured her everything was okay. However, Clare discovered that on several occasions, Aidan cheated her to show her a picture of perfection. At last, Aidan confessed, but Clare found it hard to forgive him.
