Hell or High Water Imagery

21st Century

Marcus and Alberto come to a fire and a cowboy herding cattle away from it. Here, the imagery reveals the reality of life in west Texas in the 21st century. The cowboy is herding cattle from a fire on horseback when technology is putting his line of work out of business. This imagery shows that he's part of a group of people that have been forgotten about, and we glimpse this when Marcus doesn't call in for help for the men.

Backhoe

We watch as Toby buries a stolen Taurus on their land with a backhoe. The imagery reveals how he is a man who has a plan, and that these robberies are not a spur of the moment decision but a choice strategically and meticulously planned out.

No Going Back

We see Toby and Tanner talking behind the hand made barb wire fence. They talk about what their mother left to them in her will. Tanner got nothing and Toby is giving all of his inheritance to his kids. The imagery shows that they are boxed in behind the fence and also that they've crossed a line they aren't coming back from.

Stalking

Mackenzie's camera in the opening imagery slowly stalks the Howard brother's car as it disappears and then picks up the bank teller as they assault her to get her to give them the bank's cash. The imagery created by the movement of the camera creates the feeling of stalking which in the end the men are doing that, they're stalking the bank to take its money.
