Ben Foster
The former convict Tanner Howard is played by the actor Ben Foster who portrays the deranged character in a spectacular way. Through the way in which Ben Foster plays the role of Tanner, the viewer is teleported into a world of uncertainty and violence where anything can happen at any moment. Tanner is presented as a deranged man who still manages to be pitied and understood by the audience because of his troubled background. In the film, Ben Foster portrays the downfall of the character in a manner that seems natural and unstoppable.
Chris Pine
The younger brother in the duo of mischiefs is played by the actor Chris Pine who manages to portray the character in a calm and collected manner despite the situations in which he finds himself. In comparison with Tanner who is unpredictable and violent, Toby is calm, collected and always has a plan. The actor Chris Pine captures the internal battle that is taking place within Toby when he realizes that his brother was more damaged and violence driven that he thought initially. The way the character is played also puts an emphasis on the need to survive and not on the desire to have as much money as possible.
Jeff Bridges
Marcus is played in the film by the Academy Award Nominee and Winner, Jeff Bridges. The seasoned actor plays the part of the Ranger in the film, a character who is close to retiring from his job. The actor played in many other similar instances and so his portrayal of the old Ranger is calculated. Marcus is one of the most complex characters in the film because he is a strategic thinker who tries everything he can to be a step ahead of the two brothers. He is also a man who obeys the law and thus, after his partner is killed, he is torn between his desire to get revenge and to let Toby be judged fairly.
Gil Birmingham
Alberto Parker is played by the Indian actor Gil Birmingham, something that is also referenced in the film a few times. Alberto is Marcus’s partner and he is a much younger and yet less cautious than his partner. Gil’s portrayal presents Alberto as an impulsive man, ready to prove his worth and take care of those he loves. Unfortunately for him, his lack of judgment is fatal for him in the end when he is shot and killed by one of the brothers.
Marin Ireland
Debbie is played in the film by the American actress Marin Ireland. Marine Ireland plays the role of Toby’s ex-wife. She appears in the stage when Toby and Marcus are having an argument on the porch of her house and she returns home with her children.
Katy Mixon
Jenny Ann is a minor character who is played by the actress Katy Mixon. Jenny Ann is a waitress in a diner who waited on the two brothers. She is later questioned by Marcus about the brothers.
Dale Dickey
Elsie is played by the American actress Dale Dickey who portrays the bank worker as a woman who is not afraid to stand up to the robbers. She even mocks them for their apparent lack of planning. She is among the first characters to appear on screen in the movie.
