In what is yet another adaption of William Shakespeare's classic play Hamlet, director Gregory Doran's 2009 film Hamlet is a filmed modern-dress adaption of the famed play. Hamlet tells the story of the eponymous Prince Hamlet (played in the film by David Tennant), who embarks upon a quest of revenge against his uncle Claudius (played in the film by Sir Patrick Stewart), who murdered his father in cold blood to seize the throne and marry Hamlet's mom. Set in the Denmark, the play - much like the film - Hamlet is a story of bloodlust, lust, violence, and intense and profound greed and hatred.
When it was released, Hamlet received almost universally positive reviews. Writes MaryAnn Johanson of Flick Filosopher: "[Hamlet is] all far more wonderfully dynamic than I was ever expecting it could be, both capturing the feel of the stage production while taking advantage of the possibilities of television." S. Jhoanna Robledo of Common Sense Media thought similarly, writing: "[David] Tennant is especially fun to watch as he mugs for the camera and alarms other characters while seemingly in the throes of madness. His goofy faces are tinged with despair, revealing the depths of Hamlet's misery."
