What does the narrator mean when he says, “Lavinia, Juliet, Cordelia, Perdita, Marina. All the lost daughters. But some of them had been found again. Why not his Miranda?” (15)
Students may recognize some of these names from previous classes. If they do not, they may have to do some research. Each of the names mentioned is a female character from a Shakespeare play who experienced something tragic. They are, therefore, the “lost daughters.” Some of them were able to emerge from the tragic situation okay—others, like Juliet, students may recognize as dying. With this line, the narrator is emphasizing the connection for Felix between his art and his own tragic situation. “...
