Grounded Summary

Grounded Summary

The play takes us through the journey of The Pilot, a female Air Force fighter pilot. She meets a man, Eric in a bar and he is confident and excited about her being a fighter pilot rather than being emasculated. They sleep together and weeks later The Pilot finds out she is pregnant. She flies one last time in training and tells her commanding officer. She's grounded. She then Skype calls with Eric to tell him the news, expecting the worst from him, but he surprises her and is overjoyed. They move in together, get married and their daughter, Sam is born.

Now that Sam is older, The Pilot is itching to get back to flying. Eric supports her dream and decision and she reports back to base where she is told she will be flying drones from here on out. She will no longer sit in the cockpit of the fighter planes. She's upset, but goes through the training which is in Las Vegas. The family moves, and Eric becomes a blackjack dealer at the Luxor. The Pilot works seven days a week, twelve hours a day.

The day finally comes when The Pilot has completed her training. She goes to work in an air conditioned room in the desert staring at a grey screen where she mans the drone which is overseas supporting troops and providing air support and reconnaissance. It takes a while, but she finally gets her first kill, and she recognizes that she feels the same way behind the controls of the drone as she did in the cockpit. She sweats, her adrenaline is boosted, this is like the real thing.

She continues to go on mission and protect the troops on the ground, but she starts seeing reality in black and white like the screen before her twelve hours each day. She is addicted to the hunt and it goes so deep that Eric asks her to come to couples counseling with him. She does, and never goes again. She is starting to believe that she is a god, the eye in the sky who judges the guilty. Then, she is on mission to find a highly valuable target and she follows him for days on end in a car she describes as looking like hers. The target finally exits the car in order to tell his daughter to run back inside, knowing that he is being tracked. The Pilot is given the order to destroy the target, she won't, because the girl is Sam in her mind and she can't kill a child. She crashes the drone. But, there is another drone that has been covering her, The Pilot's commanding officer noticed the signs of her stress and had reinforcements ready in case she wouldn't pull the trigger. The target and his daughter are killed, torn apart by the explosion. The Pilot is court martialed, jailed. But she declares her vengeance against those who've done this to her.
