Goethe's Faust is subtitled "A Tragedy" – but, in reality, Goethe's story actually involves two. Unlike other versions of the Faust legend, in Goethe's Faust it is customary to speak of two tragedies: a Gelehrtentragödie ("Tragedy of the Learnèd Man") involving Faust himself, and a Gretchentragödie ("Tragedy of Gretchen") involving Margarete.
