"This so big sucks.''
It is implied that the boys in the novel are rich enough to be able to afford to travel to the Moon. The quote from above shows just how the boys were affected by all the technology around them. They became unable to articulate a simple sentence and to communicate with one another in a coherent way. This appears numerous times in the novel as the characters seem unable to find the right words to communicate their thoughts and they need the help of their feed to find the meaning to the most basic words in order to communicate their thoughts.
“You’re the only one of them that uses metaphor.”
While overlooking the garden, Titus uses a metaphor to describe a vine that grew in the garden. In comparison with the rest of his friends, who were barely able to articulate a simple sentence, Titus was able to use a metaphor to describe something he was seeing. His creativity impressed Violet who was used to seeing people like Link unable to communicate properly. This quote also shows that human connect with other humans through their language and when the language disappears, the meaningful connections between one person and another disappear as well.
“I want to feel something,’’
Soon after telling that her malfunctioning feed will most likely kill her, Violet told Titus that she wanted to feel something, to feel excited. The knowledge that she was going to die soon made Violet want to feel pleasure, to risk doing foolish things just because she can do them. After learning about her feed malfunctioning, Violet became more like the teenagers who had the same age as she did, wanting to feel instant gratification and wanting to feel pleasure no matter the consequences. This shows just how much a person’s beliefs can change when a person learns about his or her immediate death.
