Michael is a middle-aged Navajo shepherd living alone in a small village. He spends his time daydreaming of his grandmother's songs, of his late wife Margaret and his daughter Sarah and granddaughter Melissa who are living far away.
Melissa, filled with anger for her alcoholic mother, leaves home late at night and is dragged into the darkness by an alluring blonde man called Falke. The next day, Melissa has a strange breakdown in school hurting her English teacher, a woman called Diana, and disappearing from the school grounds. Desperate to find Melissa and discover what happened to her, Diana visits her grandfather Michael and the two set out on a journey filled with strange Native American myths of monsters and creatures that drink blood and change their shape.
In an alternate story, Elizabeth is Falke's wife and a vampire, or eye killer, like him, and she awakens and reunites with him and Hanna, Falke's mistress. The reason Falke kidnapped and began to turn Melissa into a vampire is because he believes that she is a reincarnation of his long-lost lover Christianne. Elizabeth is walking on the gray side of morality. She realizes what they are and evil that they bring, and she wants to break free from Falke and Hanna and wants to help Melissa as well.
Michael finally discovers Melissa in a hospital only to see her being willingly dragged away by Elizabeth. Michael and Elizabeth begin to meet often and talk about their fate, and they form a connection. He realizes his daughter Sarah is dead and wants to find her body.
The mission to save Melissa falls into the hands of Diana who goes through a ritual to prepare for a battle with Eye killer. Michael is tricked by the Coyote, who is a vague spiritual guide for humans, and gets captured by Hanna and other vampires. Hanna kills Michael in front of Elizabeth, and she turns him into a vampire to save him. Instead, he turns into a coyote because of his heritage and goes to rescue his granddaughter.
Diana finally meets Melissa in a cave Falke made her stay in. She is reluctant to go back to her life, believing that her life is with Falke. Diana manages to weaken Falke with the weapons given to her by Michael's relatives and Melissa manages to escape. Falke still succeeds in following Melissa, and he gets into Michael's claws. Michael is still a not enough match for the Eye killer.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth escapes Hanna and decides to ride into the sunrise, a sight she longed for so long to see again, to end her hopeless life.
At the end, Melissa is the one who kills Falke and is finally able heal and return to her life, with Diana at her side. Michael decides to take the Eye Killer's remains to the safe, sacred place, so he won't rise again.
Arriving at the cave of the Mother, Michael buries the Eye Killer and has visions of his daughter and his wife before he dies.
