Everything is Illuminated (2002) is the first of six books that Jonathan Safran Foer has published since the early 2000's. His bibliography includes three works of fiction: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2005), Tree of Codes (2010, and Here I Am (2016). He has also published one nonfiction books, Eating Animals (2009), during that time. Foer's next book, We are the Weather, will be released in September of 2019 and tackle the issue of climate change.

Other works of fiction with similar tones and styles include Morten Ramsland's Doghead (2005), Nicole Krauss's The History of Love (2005), and Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (2000).
