"Ever After" and Other Short Stories Background

Kim Addonizio (born in 1954 in Washington, D.C., USA) is an American poet and novelist. She has published several volumes of poetry, starting in 1994 with The Philosopher’s Club and was the recipient of numerous awards, such as the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005. Her writing is most notable for its philosophical, darker content, contemplating about profound topics such as death, love or sensuality, all portrayed through keen observations of reality and human struggles.

Additional to her own writings, Addonizio has collaborated on and published several guidebooks on how to write poetry as well as works that give in-depth views on her own writing process. In interviews, Addonizio revealed that she especially delights in poetry that speaks directly to the reader as this allows for communication over time and generations.

The short story Ever After – A Paradelle” was first published in 2005 in the journal The Fairy Tale Review and then included in her second short story collection “The Palace of Illusions” in 2014. The story, that was featured on NPR’s list of “Selected Shorts” is a darker retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Addonizio has said in interviews that “writing is the only form of spirituality [she] can consistently practice” and has likened the reverence of Snow White in her short story to that of the Virgin Mary.
