Ethan sneaks out of bed and goes down to his study. He wants to take his life back. He recalls a couple with a similar situation to him and Mattie. The man divorced his wife and ran away out West with his girlfriend. The ex-wife sold the farm and started her own business; the new couple did equally well out West. Everyone had prospered. Ethan begins to write a farewell letter to Zeena. However, he realizes that due to his finances, escape really is not possible.
