Ethan and Mattie stay up late by the fire, her sewing and him smoking his pipe. They talk about the goings-on in town and they discuss the possibility of going sledding ("coasting") if there's enough moonlight one evening. When Ethan pulls his chair up to Mattie's table, the conversation becomes awkward again. They talk about Mattie leaving one day and she admits that she is worried Zeena will force her to leave one day. Ethan expresses his dismay at the idea of Mattie's departure.
