Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? Background

Dr. Seuss' Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? (originally published in 1973) is narrated by a wise old man who, through a number of very whimsical and descriptive poems, describes quite a few characters and the strange situations they find themselves in. For example, the old man describes a situation in which a character gets caught in a traffic jam in Ga-Zayt. In another, he describes an animal called the Schlottz whose tail is tangled in quite a few knots.

When it was released, Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? received mostly positive reviews. Peter Lewis of Common Sense Media, for example, loved the book. In his review, Lewis remarked that "The best way to give bad medicine is to sweeten it with humor, and Seuss does that with style."
