The paradox of family influences
Meddelin is a young woman full of life, and she wants to live happily by making her own decisions. Paradoxically, Meddelin's life is controlled by her mother and aunts. For instance, Ma makes an online dating profile to arrange a sexual relationship between Meddelin and Jake. However, the experience for Meddelin in this relationship was the worst. Similarly, when Meddelin gets an opportunity to go for studies at Columbia, she changes her decision to remain in California to be close to her family because it will not approve of her decision to go to a foreign country. Therefore, Meddelin has a bright future but will not achieve her aspirations because she must do what the family expects her to do, which goes against her principles.
Jake's death
One of the main satires that cannot be ignored by readers is the handling of Jake’s corpse. While driving back from a date, Jake tried to attack Meddelin and she pushed him in self-defense. Unfortunately, they were involved in an accident that killed Jake. Instead of reporting the incident to the police, Meddelin does the contrary and puts the lifeless body of Jake in her truck and drives it home. When she reaches home, Ma asks Meddlin’s aunties to put Jake’s body inside a fridge instead of taking it to the appropriate place. Therefore, the handling of the corpse in this context is satirical and goes against the expectations of readers.
The irony of Nathan
Nathan is arrested for a crime he never committed. Nathan is accused by the island Sheriff of Jake's murder. When Jake's body is discovered, Nathan becomes the first suspect. Ironically, Nathan pleads guilty for the crime he is sure that he never committed. Nathan is covering up for Meddelin because he loves her. Later, Meddelin’s family cooks up the story and says that Jake was trying to steal wedding gifts and he hid in the fridge to avoid being caught. Nathan is released and reunites with Meddelin.
