City of God (1994 Collection) Themes

Sexual identity

The main theme portrayed throughout the collection is the theme of sexual identity, more specifically de-sensationalizing of homosexuality. For the most part, the main characters are struggling with the stigma surrounding their sexual identity, abusive family relations, as well as exploration of oneself and one's role in the world. The stories are intertwined going through phases of struggle, realization and acceptance of not only one's position in the world but also within oneself.

Battle with fatal illness

The collection shows the battle with the fatal disease, specifically AIDS, from a personal perspective of not only being the one battling but also being a witness to a loved one's battle. It shows the unfiltered truth of dealing with regret and physical as well as emotional struggle. It follows the patterns of disbelief, regret, hope and acceptance in relation to the disease. The stories and poems are written in a way to help raise the sheet of stigma surrounding those battling with the devastating fatal illness.
