Check, Please!: #Hockey (2018) is the first entry in author Ngozi Ukazu's Check, Please manga comic book series. Ukazu's novel follows Eric Bittle, an incoming Freshman (the novel takes place in Eric's freshman and sophomore years) at Samwell University. Eric is a wonderful baker, a prolific video blogger, and a talented hockey player, which is why he came to Samwell. As Eric grows accustomed to his new situation, he also notices Jack, the captain of his hockey team. While trying to navigate his new life, Jack must also wrestle with his feelings towards Jack, who is incredibly attractive but equally moody and liable to emotional outbursts that impact everyone around him.
Reactions to Ukazu's collection were largely positive. Critics and audiences appreciated what they saw as the novel's unique story, well-drawn and riveting characters, and great illustrations. Kirkus Reviews summed up the public's feelings about the novel. They called it "A fun and deeply satisfying read for teens" and said that the dialogue is "snappy and sometimes raunchy."
