Denial of truth
When Ennis and Jack had sex in the mountains, Ennis says, “I am not no queer,” and Jack jumps in with “Me neither. A one-shot thing. Nobody’s business but ours.” It is ironic, because they disprove the fact that they are gays, although they understand that there are some senses between them.
Kissing friends
When Alma sees that Jack and Ennis are kissing, she is shocked. Ennis says, “Jack and me have not seen each other in four years.” He mentions this as though it is a valid reason. It is ironic since the kiss between two friends does not sound like an excuse that they just have not seen each other for a long time.
Comic description
When Annie Proulx describes Ennis’s appearance, she says that his smile discloses buckteeth, “not pronounced enough to let him eat popcorn out of the neck of a jug”. The situation is ironical, because Proulx wants to make the reader laugh, although in fact Ennis is a handsome man.
