"Brokeback Mountain" and Other Stories Characters

"Brokeback Mountain" and Other Stories Character List

Ennis Del Mar

Ennis Del Mar is one of the main characters of "Brokeback Mountain." Throughout the short story, the reader can notice how Ennis’s character is changing. At first, he is a calm, even-tempered and even shy guy, because he hides his relationship with Jack Twist. Ennis treats his wife Alma and children with respect. Of course, he divorces his wife because of Jack, but he does not leave the city where his daughters live. Ennis is a very devoted father. Compared with Jack Twist, Ennis is more overmodest, showing his feelings. However, later he is sorry for this.

Jack Twist

Jack Twist is the second main character of "Brokeback Mountain." He is more uninhibited, when it comes down to his feelings. Jack does not want to hide his love for Ennis and he is ready for everything for the sake of his beloved Ennis. Jack is a man with a very strong character, he is more purposeful. His only goal is to live with Ennis on their own ranch, but he does not reach his dream. For his openness and freedom of speech, he loses the hope of a happy life with Ennis Del Mar.

Alma Beers

Alma Beers is an injured party in the relationship between her husband Ennis and Jack Twist. She immediately learns about the love relationship between Ennis and Jack, but decides to keep silence for the sake of her family and children. Alma is very lonely, because there is no loved one beside her, who should support her. Nevertheless, Alma finds her happiness and marries another man.

Lureen

Judging by the situation in the short story, Lureen, the wife of Jack Twist, is in the same position as Alma. She is unhappy with Jack Twist. There is not much information about Lureen, but it is known that her father is a very influential and rich man. Lureen’s father does not like Jack that is why Lureen is often stressed out.

Joe Aguirre

Joe Aguirre is not a very positive character. There is something unpleasant about him and maybe he knows a lot about the relationship between Jack and Ennis. By the way, Aguirre is their boss. His bumpy attitude toward two men hints on his guilt in the unfortunate end of the love between Jack and Ennis.
