Boyz n the Hood Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Dominoes

We watch as the guys play dominoes and criticize Dooky for hooking up with the crackheads. They tell him he can get AIDS from having them give him oral sex. The game of dominoes is a symbol of the game that Dooky is playing with his life just to get some sort of action.

Empty Lot

We see Furious Styles, Ricky, and Tre on an empty lot as Style explains to them the meaning of the property. The lot is a symbol of gentrification, that people are seeking to push the black community out of their homes and take from them what is theirs and resell it at a higher rate.

In the Way

Tre is about to leave to kill the guys who killed Ricky, but his father stands between him and the door and Tre eventually yields to his Dad. This is a symbol of being a father is, at many times, is as simple as being where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be in order to intervene in critical moments in life. It is also a symbol that stopping your child from killing out on the streets happens in your home.

Scratch off tickets

We see Ricky rubbing a scratch off lottery tickets with a coin as he walks into a gunman who takes his life. It's a symbol that Ricky choosing to split up from Tre is a crap shoot for his life, just like the scratch off is a crap shoot to win money.

Spatter

Doughboy is seen covered in blood spatter after shooting two of three men close up after a drive-by. His blood spattered face is a symbol of him being stained with the violence and reality of murder, that it is becoming his identity which is far from who he is as a man.
