Watch people when they win, and you will learn something. Watch them when they lose, and you will learn even more.
This is a thought-provoking observation and also a true one. When a person wins, you see mostly the qualities that have carried them to victory. They are hard working, determined, single-minded and dedicated. They have strength of character, because they will work when they do not feel like working, keeping their eyes on the ultimate goal. If they are winning in a team environment then they must also be good team players, generous, willing to share the limelight which shows that they are not egotistical or arrogant.
When a person loses, you still see all the characteristics of the winner that have got them to a place where they can compete; skill set, dedication, hard work, determination - all of these are still present. How a person loses will show you whether or not they have grace, humility and self-respect. Whether they have the ability to use their defeat as a personal teachable moment, a stepping stone, an inspiration, or whether they blame others for their defeat, unwilling to accept responsibility. From a winner you can learn the best about a person, and what they are, but when you see them in defeat, you are also able to see what they are not.
In China, a woman is nothing.
Parents in China are often so distraught at the birth of a female child that they abandon her, or worse, determined that they, too, will have a son and heir worth bragging about and showering with love. In China, a woman is simply there to attend to the needs of men, or to take on the roles that men do not want to. There is no respect for women, because how can something that is nothing be worth respect? Women are less human and more doll-like in Chinese society, and foot binding is a clear example of this. Women's feet are bound to prevent them from growing larger as feet are prone to doing when a child grows into a woman. This delicate image is something that men desire, and it is a woman's responsibility to fulfill this requirement. There is no such thing as a feminist in China; women are worth nothing, and their lack of worth is made evident to them from their birth.
