Bound Feet and Western Dress Background

Bound Feet and Western Dress is a memoir written by Pang-Mei Chang about her aunt, Chang Yu-i. Both of these characters are women, and Chang writes about the hardships of being a woman in China today and during the time of her aunt. One of those hardships, as seen by the title, is the peer pressure of binding your feet, a practice of breaking your foot because men found it pleasurable. Chang Yu-i grew up with the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the rise of the Communist Revolution. The book was published in 1997.

Ms. Chang is an American immigrant from China. Not much information on her is available, as she has chosen to stay out of the public spotlight. She does say, however, that she is very proud of and was inspired by her aunt, and that is why she chose to write this biography. The most notable thing that Chang Yu-i did was start the first women-owned bank in China.
