Chang Yu-i
Chang Yu-i was born in Baoshan, China, in a wealthy family. In the Chang household, only male children are important and, girls believe to be of no importance. Despite being a girl, Chang Yu-i refuses to bound her feet. She marries Hsu Chih-mo at the age of fifteen and continues her study. A few years later, she travels to Europe to live with her husband, but her husband abandons Chang Yu-i for his lover.
She settles in Berlin and starts working as a kindergarten teacher. In 1926, she returns to China and starts working in Woman's Savings Bank as a vice president and becomes the general manager of Yunchang clothing store. Chang Yu-remarries with Dr. Su. She emigrates to America after the death of her husband and dies at the age of 88.
Hsu Chih-mo
Hsu Chih-mo is an ambitious man. After marrying Chang Yu-i, he goes to the U.S. for further studies. While attending the London School of Economics, he falls in love with a fellow student Lin Huiyin.
Lin Huiyin
Lin Huiyin is the classmate and love interest of Hsu Chih-mo.
Peng Mei Natasha Chang
Natasha is the niece of Chang Yu-i. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Natasha is Chinese-American, but she loves her culture and traditions. Having been impressed by her great aunt's life story, she decides to write a memoir.
