Domingo is ordered to investigate the killing of the eagle and abandon his investigation into the disappearance of the farmers.

Foreshadowing

Diego gives Maya a gun which foreshadows the killing of the birds because of her inexperience with it.

The birds are said to be rare and prized which understates their importance; killing the birds actually is seen as a more heinous crime than abducting or killing a group of farmers.
