How does Carlos Fuentes explore age in Aura?
Age is a significant aspect of Aura, and is repeatedly referred to in the text. Firstly, the contrast in ages between Montero and Consuelo is emphasized, as she is depicted as frail and old. Instead, Montero falls in love with her young niece, Aura - whose youth and beauty is emphasized.
Consuelo is obsessed with her age during the text, wishing she were young and able to have children. There is one example in the text where Montero wears a watch, and she is angered because it reminds her of the passing of time. There are also interesting parts of the text where Aura's age seems to fluctuate. One day she is young, and other days she seems to look older.

How is fertility presented in the text?
The theme of fertility in this text is directly associated with age. While the elderly Consuelo longs for a child but cannot have one, Aura is associated with the color green, representing her fertility and youth. Consuelo's inability to have a child, and her longing to return to her youth and have one represents her regret at having not done everything she wanted to do in her youth.
