Friendship

Jazz and Kelvin are friends who constantly write to one another. They are very supportive of one another. Kelvin is from Kenya and lives on Earth while Jazz lives on the only moon city Artemis. They work together to smuggle illegal materials into Artemis from Earth. Her other friend is Dale. They were very close until Dale had an affair with Jazz's ex-boyfriend. They eventually reconcile and help each other in exposing the criminal syndicate on Artemis. Dale also saves Jazz's life and their friendship becomes strong again. The friendships she makes on Artemis prove crucial in dire times.

Morality

Artemis being a moon city, does not have the same laws and moral conduct as those on earth. People in the city have questionable morals and the multiculturalism that exists further blurs the line between right and wrong. While Jazz might seem like a good person, she illegally smuggles things into Artemis. She sabotages the machines that provide oxygen to the city, endangering everyone in the city in exchange for money. Jazz however tries her best to write her wrongs by exposing the crime syndicate and risks her life to save the people living in Artemis.

Space Science/Engineering

Andy Weir loves to explore complex and detailed scientific processes in his books. In this book, he deconstructs the science behind welding and the crucial scientific procedures to abide by while living in Artemis. The book also explores space travel and delves deep into the workings of spaceships.

The manufacture of oxygen is crucial in the sustainability of life in Artemis and the writer goes to great lengths to explain how it is extracted from the aluminum production on the moon. Jazz's main mission is to safeguard a new technology from the syndicate that allows for effective long-distance communications. This technology is very significant in Artemis and will greatly benefit the economy of the moon city.
