Expression Through movement

Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.


The pointe shoes on my feet carry me across the floor with restrained urgency, the movement of my arms in alignment to the syncopation of the music. Ideas flow through my fingertips, and manifest themselves in the form of choreography.

From a young age, a creative thirst permeated my life. When my minimal vocabulary failed to grasp the complexity of my emotions, I struggled to find outlets where I could fully express my thoughts. Once my mom placed me in ballet classes, however, I fell in love with this medium of movement.

Art itself is a nuanced word, and art, for me, is expression through movement. I’m captivated by how a mere difference in the articulation of my fingers can convey vastly different meanings. I can portray power at the crescendo of Mozart’s Lacrimosa, and moments later express fragility through the whisper of Chopin’s Nocturnes. My brain is constantly buzzing with ideas, and choreography is my means of expression.

Though I was convinced that nothing could separate me from dancing, countless knee, back, and pelvis injuries inevitably halted my career. Ballet became my lost art, and I mourned the death of my creativity.
