Individual Writing
Objective:
Students will be able to use McCourt as a mentor text for writing about memory
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.3, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.5, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.6
Structure:
Ask a student to read aloud the section that begins: "I'm on the playground with my brother Malachy on Classon Avenue …" Consider Frank's age in this segment. He's established that he's talking about a memory, but this must be the first memory of his life. What is surprising about that, given the description?
Move students into groups of three. Ask them to share their earliest memory. Encourage them to ask each other...
