What is the fate of Tetsuo?

Tetsuo, a member and best friend of Capsules gang leader Kaneda, has had his latent psychic powers unleashed after crashing into a psychic esper while battling a gang in the streets of Neo-Tokyo. Tetsuo's powers grow, but he is not able to control them and the rage and violence that lies within him comes forth in a manner that destroys everything in his path. Akira is called back from the dead in order to stop him by creating a singularity burst that consumes Tetsuo who ultimately is confined to a parallel universe where he is able to create without limits galaxies and worlds to please himself. But in this parallel universe, he cannot effect his universe of origin and thus he cannot hurt anyone nor can he be with his friends.

What happened to cause Neo-Tokyo to be built?

The film is based in Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019. Neo-Tokyo was built from the ashes of the original Tokyo which was destroyed when a powerful psychic named Akira created a singularity that emitted a city destroying blast. This blast also set off World War III in 1988. But out of the War peace was created only decades later.

How does Tetsuo get his psychic powers?

Tetsuo joins the Capsules leader and his best friend Kaneda in fighting against the Clowns in a gang war in the streets of Neo-Tokyo. They are crushing the Clowns when Tetsuo crashes into a psychic esper who has escaped from captivity into the streets of the city. By plowing into the esper Tetsuo's latent psychic powers are unlocked and he begins to grow in his telekinetic powers.
