A Woman in Berlin Irony

A Woman in Berlin Irony

The irony of the author’s second rape

The author narrates her horrible ordeal of sexual abuse by the Russian soldiers during the Berlin capture. The author considered has first rape as defenseless act because she was overwhelmed. When the landlord, Herr Pauli, returned the author felt secure because she was sure of some kind of protection. Ironically, the Russian soldier sneaked in and raped her merciless and he opened her mouth wide so that he could spit inside!

The irony of the narrator’s exclusive sexual relationship

Sexual relationships should be based on love. Ironically, the author forces herself into an exclusive sexual relationship with a top-ranking Russian soldier to avoid being humiliated with the lower ranking soldiers. The reader finds it ironic that the author makes up her mind to offer exclusive sex to a top individual with complete disregard of her personality.

The satire of the Russian soldiers

The reader asks the question, what is the role of the Russian soldier in the Berlin capture? Obviously, raping women and physical abuse to civilians is not part of their role. Ironically, the soldiers have prioritized raping women such as the author and other vulnerable women. Therefore, it is entirely satirical to note that the Russian are breaching their work contract.

The irony of the narrator

The reader realizes that the narrator goes through a horrific experience of rape from the Russian soldiers. The author is one among the many women who were sexually abused. However, in most circumstances, women decide to keep quite because it is embarrassing to reveal their rape encounters. Ironically, the narrator is a courageous woman who starts a commercial press to openly discuss her rape encounters with the Russian soldiers.

The irony of Gerd

Gerd is a longtime boyfriend of the narrator and he left for military duties sometime back. While he was away, the author went through trouble and horrific experiences including rape. When there was normalcy in Berlin, Gerd came back to reunite with the narrator. Ironically, Gerd does not want to hear the narrator talk about her experiences. The reader finds it satirical that Gerd does not want to hear about his girlfriend’s story as if he does not know what happens in war.
