A White Heron and Other Stories was first published in 1886. By then, Jewett was an established writer, having begun her writing career in 1868 with the publication of her story “Mr. Bruce” in Atlantic Monthly. Jewett was fond of the title story “A White Heron,” which was not considered suitable for Atlantic Monthly. She wrote of it in a letter to her companion Annie Fields, saying, “What shall I do with my ‘White Heron’ now she is written?
