Dream
Larry has a dream that he is going through the Uncertainty Principle with his students before getting beat up by Sy. The Uncertainty Principle states that we can't ever really know what is going on, and even though you can't figure anything out you are still responsible for it. The nightmare is a symbol that Larry's marriage has fallen apart and he didn't even know what was going on.
Solving Problems
The Junior Rabbi tells Larry to take a look at the parking lot, something he's seen hundreds of times before and see it with fresh eyes in order to gain new perspective, which is what he needs. This is a symbol of the Rabbi's lack of experience in these situations as he doesn't even know what Larry is going through before he offers up a solution. The parking lot becomes a symbol of what the Junior Rabbi has yet to experience and the level of counsel he's able to give currently.
Move Out
Judith and Sy ask Larry to move out of the house and pay for a motel in order to keep peace with the kids. Larry suggests they move in together as it makes more logical sense. But they both disagree as it would be inappropriate seeing as they aren't married. Even though they are already sleeping together.
Nothing
Larry tells his superior that he hasn't had any written work published since being on staff as a professor. His boss tells him that nothing is good. The symbol here is that the guidance we get from others at work can be misleading and wrong. We must lead our own lives or fail to have the outcomes we desire.
Rabbis
Larry is seen pleading with Rabbi Marshak's secretary and above him are paintings of multiple Rabbis. This situation symbolizes that Larry has been through multiple Rabbis already and nothing has worked. And the fact that the paintings mark a line through his mind symbolizes that Larry believes that the Rabbis will be able to help, he just hasn't gotten the right one yet.
