A Serious Man Irony

A Serious Man Irony

Junior Rabbi

Larry sees the Junior Rabbi to help with his marital problem. The Junior Rabbi listens and then comes up with a solution sure to solve Larry's problem: he needs a new perspective! Ironically, the Rabbi didn't listen long enough to find out that Larry's wife is with another man and already leaving him.

Pleading

Larry pleads with Rabbi Marshak's assistant to let him see the Rabbi. So she gets up to see if the Rabbi is available; it doesn't look like he's entirely busy. Ironically, she tells Larry that the Rabbi is busy and can't see him.

Tenure

Larry is up for review before the tenure board. Ironically, he hasn't had any papers published, which would help his case for tenure track. His superior tells him that having done nothing is good.

Sy and Judith

Sy and Judith meet with Larry in order to speak with him about living arrangements for the children. Ironically, they ask Larry to move out of the house when Sy and Judith are intimately together. They reject having Judith move in with Sy as being inappropriate.

Nightmare

A man and his wife are seen in the opening of the film. The man tells her that another man helped him fix his wagon. Ironically, she tells her husband the man has been dead for three years and when the man arrives she stabs him. With blood rushing out of the visitor's body, it's hard to tell if he was an evil spirit or a man who was just stabbed.
