After building it up so much, why does the author choose to not describe the narrator's meeting with the widow explicitly?
This is an open-ended question. One of the more obvious possible answers is that the author chose not to explicitly describe the encounter because he had been building up to it for so long. Because the build-up had been so intense, the author may not have thought it likely that he could write a satisfying conclusion for this part of the book's plot.
