Babies
When X is just a baby, the Joneses face many questions about X's gender despite telling their relatives that X is an X. The narrator emphasizes the fact that babies are, fundamentally, free from all the pressures of gender conformity by having X respond to these inquiries with a simple burp after eating.
Children's Clothing
Of course, one of the primary images in the story is the clothing that X and the Other Children wear to school: the girls wear dresses, the boys wear pants, and X wears checked overalls. At first, the Other Children are confused by X's outfits, a they do not immediately reveal X's gender. Later, however, the Other Children begin wearing similar clothes, signifying their acceptance of X and their own curiosity about gender neutrality.
