Sheriff Holston
Holston serves as Sheriff of the silo for years, overseeing cleanings and enforcing laws. When his wife is sentenced to cleaning, he questions the nature of his reality and doubts the silo's version of history. Resigned and depressed, disillusioned by his wife's death, he voluntarily undergoes "the cleaning."
Mayor Jahns
Mayor Jahns is an older woman and the leader of the silo who meets with Holston before his execution. Mayor Jahns takes a legalistic approach to enforcing the silo's rules, and she sentences more people to "cleaning" than any of her predecessors.
Deputy Marnes
Deputy Marnes is Holston's second-in-command who becomes sheriff after Holston's death.
Allison
Allison is a computer technician and Sheriff Holston's wife. She uncovers overwritten files and computer programs that generate false images of the outside world. Allison is so committed to learning the truth that she commits the "great offense" by saying she wants to go outside. She is sent outside for cleaning, which is equivalent to capital punishment, but because she fully believes the earth's surface to be habitable, she promises to come back for Holston.
Nelson
Nelson is a technician who helps Holston into his hazmat suit and explains the procedure. Like all cleaning techs, Nelson treats his role in the silo with reverence and "cult-like intensity."
