Biography of Hugh Howey

Hugh Howey is an American science fiction writer. Born in 1975 in Charlotte, North Carolina, Howey dreamed of sailing around the world and writing a novel. In addition to living on a sailboat for five years, Howey held several jobs before becoming a science fiction writer, including working in computer repair, roofing, and captaining a yacht. He wrote Wool during his breaks working at a bookstore.

Howey was inspired to write Wool while working as a yacht captain before settling down and learning about the world only from newspapers and television. These experiences led Howey to realize how much of his knowledge of the outside world was filtered through a narrative lens.

He began self-publishing his work on Amazon.com to financial success. The popularity of his first book, Wool, attracted the attention of the publishing company Simon & Schuster, who purchased the rights and published an edition of the book.

In addition to Wool, Howey has published twenty-six books, including three nonfiction books about wayfinding. Currently, Howey is sailing around the world on his catamaran, navigating using traditional wayfinding methods.
