Modern women

Many of Beattie's stories are about modern women, their struggle in the modern world, and in their domestic relationships. In her stories, Beattie expresses the feelings of alienation, loneliness, and isolation that many women feel, channeling this through different characters with unique personal experiences. Many of these women have difficulties navigating the world of love and relationships, from struggling to maintain a happy marriage, to finding it difficult to commit fully.

Wealth and status

Significantly, many of the characters in this text are financially comfortable, but nonetheless feel a lack of fulfillment with their lives. It seems that they have become consumed with superficiality and status, and therefore struggle to find a true sense of meaning and purpose.
