When the Killing's Done Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Environmental degradation

Environmental degradation is symbolized by invasive human activity aimed at profit maximization with total disregard of conservation. According to Takesue, the disruption of the balance of nature is due to man's ignorance and actions. Therefore, people must come up with proper strategies to prevent environmental pollution from preventing possible extinction.

The invasive rats and pigs

According to Alma, the current ecological dilemma has been caused by the invasive rats and pigs that have invaded the island, leaving no room for predators to thrive. Consequently, the invasive rats and pigs represent human beings who have negatively impacted the environment, making it inhabitable to other creatures.

Anise as a symbol of violence and aggression

Anise is Dave's girlfriend, and she plays a role in helping him commit terrorist activities against fellow environmental activities. Anise's early hard life made her sadistic and belligerent. For instance, Anise went through an abusive relationship with her ex-husband, and now she is on a revenge mission.

Biblical symbolism

The biblical symbolism is evident in Dave’s approach to environmental conservation. According to Dave, it is proper to relocate some animals to particular places to ensure their survival. Dave follows his concept of activism from Noah’s biblical story in which he put selective animals in the ark to ensure the survival of future generations.
