Alma Boyd Takesue
This animal rights activist is aware that human decisions have led to a serious ecological dilemma; invasive rats and pigs have taken over the habitat, having no natural predators on the Channel Islands. She argues that the correct approach to ecological balance will be to undo the damage that humans have done.
Dave LaJoy
This ecoterrorist is a would-be animal rights activist, but he cannot tell that he and Takesue are on the same side. When she disagrees with his half-baked, zealous opinions about animal rights, he terrorizes her, spray-painting her car, breaking-and-entering her office, and eventually making it his personal business to bother her and keep her paranoid—all in the name of animal rights.
Beverly Boyd
Although Alma's grandmother, Beverly, has different opinions about the world, Alma cannot help but wrestle with her own political opinions. When she becomes pregnant, she fears this woman, Beverly, who came to the Islands as a shipwreck survivor, and who is somewhat judgmental.
Anise
A toxic girlfriend of Dave's who helps him commit terrorist acts on animal rights activists for not agreeing with their point of view. Anise was forced into a difficult life on the islands when her mother moved their as a cook to avoid an abusive husband. Her mother did the best she could, but Anise is violent and aggressive in her beliefs.
