“What have I done to deserve this” is a translated title of the Spanish movie “Que he hecho yo para merecer esto” by one of the most prolific Spanish director. The movie falls into the genre of black comedy, meaning that it portrays some serious topic in a lighthearted manner with a comedic effect.
The main protagonist of the movie is Gloria, an unhappy housewife whose contempt for her grows by the day because of his obsession with a song from his lover from the past, a German singer Ingrid who allegedly was in communication with Hitler. Gloria’s family life slowly tears apart, with her children being involved with drugs and sex, and her mother-in-law an alcoholic, while her husband wants to make a business out of forgery. This culminates in a tragic end where she kills her cheating husband and contemplates suicide herself.
The movie is a story about a woman’s tragic story, the breakdown of her psyche cause by external stress induced by her problematic family.
