Wellmania Imagery

The imagery of the bedroom

The narrator describes her living conditions in Brooklyn to depict a picture of misery. The narrator says, "We had a loft bedroom in which guests slept centimeters from exposed pipes leaking something that wasn't poisonous but unpleasant. We always kept the windows open, even when it was cold." The warehouse where the narrator lives with her colleagues is smelly and dirty. The imagery represents the tough working conditions of travel journalists because, most of the time, they need to be given proper accommodation.

The narrator’s thirties and teens

The narrator describes her thirties and teens to paint a picture of a reckless lifestyle. The narrator says, "My thirties and teens had been years of living wildly. I'd a debauched thirtieth in Barcelona meant to be goodbye to all that." The imagery is important because it shows how the narrator lived a carefree life in her early years. The outcome of the carefree life of the narrator is a loss of focus, an increase in body weight and shapelessness.

The imagery of New York

The description of New York during the Christmas season depicts both smell and sight imagery. When the narrator returns to New York from Texas, she says, "Back in New York, it was freezing. There was snow on the footbath, and the pine scent of freshly cut Christmas trees was in the air." Snow and pine scent signify the narrator's new life in New York. Unlike her past life in Texas and other cities, she starts realizing that she needs to change her lifestyle.
