Olivia "Liv" Healy
Olivia is a successful culinary writer who is resilient, determined, and self-sufficient. She is also a little selfish and leads an unhealthy lifestyle. She is not hesitant to express herself, which frequently gets her into problems. She is frequently insensitive to the feelings of others and selfish. For example, when Liv accepts an offer to serve as a judge on a cooking competition television show, she travels to Sydney, Australia, to celebrate the 40th birthday of her lifelong closest friend, Amy Kwan. When she arrives, however, she immediately incites conflict between Amy and her editor, Helen King, by belittling her. She also meddles in Amy's personal life by stealing her phone and interfering with her affairs.
Another instance of Liv's selfishness occurs when she applies for a new green card and Dr. Priyanka Singh informs her that she must lower her cholesterol levels to qualify. Rather than following the doctor's advice, Liv storms out of the clinic, declaring that she will drop her cholesterol levels in under four weeks.
Despite her weaknesses, Liv has moments when she is empathetic and generous. For example, she delivers Amy's son, Archie, a gift and invites herself to Archie's birthday party. When Liv tries to acquire a scoop on Gabriel Wolf's new eating habits, Helen refuses to give her access to the magazine's resources and threatens Liv that she won't be able to publish her article unless she gets her permission.
Helen, on the other hand, is not without flaws. She can be harsh and unforgiving. Helen is quick to condemn Liv's article on Camille Lavinge, pointing out that it is full of sensationalism and fails to convey the heart of the tale.
