    How has our picture of Mr. Howlands changed over the course of the novel?

    Students may agree that our perception of him grows darker and darker, even despite the fact that we see increasingly through his point of view. Even though there are more occasions to view him as a sympathetic character, also a victim in his own way, his vengeful ways (the torture of Njoroge, for example), and his hatred engulf what little humanity we might have seen in him. Strong answers will observe his possible intentions to live symbiotically or peacefully in Kenya and contrast this with his violent and hateful acts.
