Why, then, did we take the stake of all we had and place it all on this outrageous gamble of having a child?
After the fatal Thursday, which made Eva a widow, a mother of one dead child and one mass murderer, Eva couldn’t help but wonder why she decided that she could be a mother, that parenthood was for her. That is a really interesting thing to think about, for parenthood has been always worshiped. Those, who decide not to have children, have to fight with the social’s disapproval and accusation of being selfish. The truth is that humankind is not under threat of disappearance, there is no need for every living person to reproduce. This was the conclusion Eva made, but then she had to ask one more question, “why, then, did we take the stake of all we had and place it all on this outrageous gamble of having a child?” Unfortunately, there is no exact answer. The only thing everyone should realize is that parenthood is not about happiness 24/7, it is hard work and if one thinks that he/she is not ready to take on the responsibility, it is better not to do it at all.
You never wanted to have me, did you?
Kevin was too smart for his own good. He felt that Eva’s patience and dutifulness had nothing to do with love or adoration mothers always felt towards their children. He was right. Franklyn “wanted to have child” and Eva “did not”. She thought that she would be able to learn to love that child later. Then she thought that she failed to made Franklyn “love eggplant”, so why she expected that she would be able to make herself love the child. Being his usual cruel self, Kevin asked her, “you never wanted to have me, did you?” But he already knew the answer.
Do you understand why?
People need explanations, because having them one can at least try to understand the reasons of this or that phenomenon. We are afraid of the things we can’t understand. Herb Is the man of logic, he knows that there are rules and he follows them, so when the tragedy happens, Herb is left heartbroken. He asks his daughter-in-law whether she can “understand why”, for it is important for him to find answer. Herb is not the only one who asks this question. But there is no answer, for Kevin’s and other mass murderers’ motives could not be explained with the help of logic.
