Thoreau, the Surveyor

Students will research in more depth Thoreau's method for surveying Walden Pond.

Structure:

In Walden, Thoreau gives a survey of Walden Pond in the 1800s. Ask student to read The Pond in Winter and review how Thoreau surveyed the pond and what his results are. Then, direct students to a drawing of the survey: http://thoreau.eserver.org/survey.html

How did he do it? Divide students into four groups and provide each group with one of the following articles:
