Sex, Lies, and Politics
But for a time discrepancy of two or three months, the average person watching this movie might think that the key theme was the Clinton administration; in actual fact, it is more like sex, lies and politics, because everything that happens in the film is centered around the fact that the President has had sex in the oval office, and is trying to invent a strategy that will allow him to persuade the public to see him in a different light again.
The lies begin almost immediately, to an extreme degree - the administration creates a fictitious war in Albania which the President is then reported to swoop in, super hero-like, and broker an accord that brings peace between the warring factions. This theme demonstrates more than a dishonesty or a general air of shadiness in politics; it shows that we the people are being lied to constantly for the benefit of the administration of the day, and that the world of politics is a well-oiled machine rather than a group of people eager to make a difference in the world and serve the people.
Fake News
Almost all of the news that is reported in the movie is fake news, the only exception being the news about the President's predilection for sexual relations in his office. All subsequent news stories are fake which calls into question the validity of almost everything we are told on a daily basis, and consequently our understanding of the geo-political situation around us. The American people governed by the fictional president in the movie have a very dim view of Albania, believe their president to be honorable and vote accordingly; this of course is the point of the spin that his administration put on his activities.
Sex and Power
The President of the United States of America is the most powerful man in the world and therefore one of the hardest to stand up to. As history tells us this also makes the President sexually irresistible, and in the movie, he really makes the most of this. Power is a very strong aphrodisiac and this provides the basis for the majority of the movie's plot. However, there is also a strong suggestion that the President is preying on women who are powerless, thereby making it almost impossible for them to say no to him.
