Wag the Dog Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Motss

Motss demands recognition for what he's done to save the Presidency. So much so that he threatens to go public with the fake war. For this threat Brean has him killed. This is a symbol of hubris on the part of Motss who would rather have attention and popularity over his life.

Media

Media is the focus of the film in that whatever stories they break become the reality of the lives of the American people. Thus the media is a symbol of a divisive platform which puts out new of what is most alarming rather than of what is true.

The War

Brean and Motss create a fake for between the United States and Albania. The war is a symbol of the distraction that the President and powerful people use in order to keep people's attention upon those things that are not the main things.

Globe

We see Brean and Motss standing above a globe as Motss points out Albania. The globe is a symbol of these men playing with the lives of innocent people, turning the world into a place that is make believe for them to play with how they please.

Hands

Winifred and Brean are talking with Mr. Young who is accusing them of the war being fake. Winifred's hands are moving nervously in a close up before the camera moves to Brean who is not moving at all. This is a symbol that Brean will not break and Winifred is on the verge of telling all as she knows they know the war is fake.
