Vampires in the Lemon Grove Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

What religious connotations are there in the story?

The major comparison between the story and religion lies in its reference to the Bible and the Garden of Eden. However, there is a slight gender role reversal in this story. Whilst Magreb can be deemed to take on the role of Adam, it is Clyde who takes on the role of Eve, in that he is not entirely happy with his life and seeks more, typically through the role of Fila. Fila is a source of utmost temptation for Clyde and though she is friendly and shares a love of the grove, ultimately this is not enough to save her.

  2. 2

How is innocence portrayed in the story?

Innocence is most prominently portrayed through the role of Fila. She is a young teenager who helps out on the lemon grove, and through she is shown to be a gentle and unassuming character, she is far less naïve than expected. Indeed, Clyde comments that he wonders how much she thought him of as a monster. Despite the knowledge of him being a vampire, Fila continues to treat with respect and kindness. However, much like many stories about young females being sacrifice, Fila is ultimately sacrificed to curb Clyde’s cravings.
